A terraced rice field in Banjaran, Bandung Regency, Indonesia, suffers from drought during the dry season. The only water source during the dry season is a river that is located at the lowest point of the terraced rice field. A water pump is needed to transfer the water from the river to the water tank which is located at the highest point. A 1 kWp off-grid solar photovoltaic (PV) system with 3,600 Wh battery system and 5 kL water tank is designed to supply the water pump. The performance of the system was evaluated through PVSyst simulation and tested in the field. Results show that the system is capable of providing 6,580 L water when it was operated from 10 a.m.to 2 p.m. daily. During the dry season, the solar water pump has successfully supplied the water for land irrigation. The water produced is sufficient for crop irrigation, specifically corn, and the system can be scaled up for the rice field irrigation. The reliability of the system makes it promising alternative to conventional irrigation system for small-scale farming in the region.
